Guru Nanak Dev University will launch a digital archive and documentary project on S. Fauja Singh for future generations- Vice Chancellor
Sri Amritsar-Guru Nanak Dev University paid a heartfelt tribute to the legendary marathon runner Fauja Singh, who passed away recently at the age of 114, with a one-day memorial event held on campus. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Karamjeet Singh, announced that the university will organize an annual commemorative event to honor Fauja Singh’s legacy, inspiring future generations with his remarkable life and achievements.
Addressing students, faculty, and distinguished guests, Prof. Karamjeet Singh said, “Fauja Singh was not just an athlete; he was a symbol of Punjabi spirit, resilience, and self-belief. He brought global recognition to Punjabis and lived his life as a message, embodying the teachings of the Sikh Gurus. His journey proved that age is no barrier to achieving greatness.” He emphasized that the annual event would serve as a platform to motivate youth to draw inspiration from Fauja Singh’s disciplined and purposeful life.
He said that Guru Nanak Dev University will launch a digital archive and documentary project to preserve the life, motivational journey, and teachings of S. Fauja Singh for future generations. The event, attended by prominent figures, featured a tree-planting ceremony in Fauja Singh’s memory and the screening of a special documentary highlighting his extraordinary journey. The university also felicitated members of Fauja Singh’s family, presenting them with a portrait of the iconic runner as a token of honor.
Chief guest Sukhi Bath, a noted writer and social worker, shared a personal anecdote: “Seeing Fauja Singh was my father’s last wish. When he saw him, he said, ‘Son, I have seen the embodiment of God.’ In an era where the youth chase material wealth, Fauja Singh’s life teaches us that true legacy lies in love, integrity, and self-contentment, achieved through simplicity and discipline.” Eminent writer, Sh. Sourav Duggal, another speaker, remarked, “Fauja Singh will remain a source of inspiration for centuries to come.”
The event commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Amandeep Singh, Head of the Physical Education Department, and expressing gratitude to all participants. He reaffirmed GNDU’s commitment, under Prof. Karamjeet Singh’s leadership, to continue such initiatives to connect students with the lives of revered personalities.
The tribute event underscored Fauja Singh’s enduring legacy as a global icon who defied age to run nine marathons, including the London Marathon at 89, earning him the title of “Turbaned Tornado” and a place in the hearts of millions worldwide.
At the conclusion of the event, Dr. Baljinder Singh Ball thanked all the guests, stating that under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Karmjeet Singh, such events would continue to connect students with the lives of honorable personalities. The stage was moderated by Dr. Parminder Singh. On this occasion, S. Harinder Singh, son of S. Fauja Singh, S. Sukhwant Singh, son-in-law, S. Parmjeet Singh, Nephew, S. Harshlinder Singh, Sarpanch of village Bias, Jalandhar, and grandson Harleenwant Singh were present.
