“Enterprise or endeavour leads to wealth, just as a fan brings a cool breeze.” Even a person who does not fully understand the meaning of this saying often uses it in praise of hard work and an enterprising nature.
In Sikhism, great emphasis has been laid on endeavour so that a person, while leading a responsible family life, may also play a worthy role in society, religion, and the community. Through the sacred teachings of the Gurus and Gurbani, one is inspired in many ways to lead an active and enthusiastic life.
Gurbani teaches that the spirit of endeavour purifies the mind and energizes the body:
“By making the endeavour, my mind is rendered purified.” (Ang 99)
Endeavour, which is a keynote of the Sikh faith, also brings peace, joy, and calmness to the mind:
“By endeavouring in the way of God, the heart becomes joyful.” (Ang 201)
This uddam (endeavour) does not support asceticism, renunciation, or escapism. Rather, it encourages an active household life. The spirit of endeavour rejects parasitism and laziness. A true devotee of the Guru is a sincere and honest worker — a giver, a donor, and one who shares earnings with the less fortunate.
It is an established truth that righteous endeavour brings contentment and deep inner satisfaction. Efforts made in the spiritual sphere lead toward supreme bliss:
“By endeavouring in the way of God, I found bliss.” (Ang 815)
However, endeavours driven by ego cannot be called pure, for they fill the mind with pride and self-conceit, ultimately leading a person toward evil passions and destructive tendencies. Such a person deviates from the true purpose of life. Gurbani warns:
“In ego, one loses one’s caste and lineage.”
Therefore, to become successful on the journey of life, one must remain alert and ensure that one’s efforts are positive, wise, and righteous. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji provides complete guidance so that one may not abandon the path of endeavour and fall into laziness or inactivity.

“By endeavouring and working honestly, O soul, enjoy peace and happiness.
By meditating upon God, attain union with the Lord; thus, says Nanak, your anxieties shall depart.”
(Ang 522)
One is expected to work hard and do so with honesty and diligence. Through righteous earnings, a person can lead a socially honourable and respectable life. Such earnings provide comfort and fulfilment to the devotee.
Along with performing worldly duties, the enterprising devotee should constantly remember God, the Bestower of all blessings and the Supreme Giver. By maintaining this balance between worldly responsibilities and spiritual remembrance, one can attain union with the Almighty.
Such a person neither remains burdened with worry nor fears worldly troubles. The individual whose hands remain engaged in honest labour and whose mind remains focused on the Divine Master successfully crosses the worldly ocean. Through selfless dedication to an enterprising life and remembrance of the Holy Name, such a person becomes successful in this world and acceptable in the Divine Court.

“By endeavouring in the way of God, the mind becomes peaceful and serene;
By walking upon this path, all suffering departs.”
(Ang 201)
True endeavour brings peace to the mind and removes suffering from life. Gurbani does not encourage idleness, dependence, or withdrawal from society. Instead, it teaches humanity to live actively, truthfully, and responsibly while remaining spiritually connected with the Divine.
The Sikh way of life is therefore a balanced path — combining honest labour, remembrance of God, sharing with others, and selfless service. Such endeavour not only uplifts the individual but also strengthens society and humanity as a whole.
